ICMR-NIRT celebrates 70th Annual Day

ICMR–National Institute for Research in Tuberculosis (ICMR-NIRT), Chennai, celebrated its 70th Annual Day on 19th August 2026, marking seven decades of the Institute’s contribution to tuberculosis research and public health. The celebrations were held at the NIRT Campus, Chennai, as well as at the Institute’s Madurai Unit, bringing together members of the ICMR-NIRT family in celebration of this significant institutional milestone.

At the NIRT Campus, Chennai, the celebration brought together the Institute’s scientific, technical, administrative and support staff in a spirit of camaraderie and institutional pride. The occasion also provided an opportunity to acknowledge the dedicated service of staff members who have completed 25 years of service at the Institute.

The formal programme commenced with an invocation, followed by the welcome address by Dr. Umashankar V, Scientist-F and Chairman, Annual Day Celebrations Committee, ICMR-NIRT. Dr. Srinath Satyanarayana, Director, ICMR-NIRT, delivered the inaugural address, wherein he presented the annual report of the institute.

The celebration was honoured by the presence of Prof. Dr Ramesh PM, Superintendent & HOD, Respiratory Medicine, Government Hospital of Thoracic Medicine, Tambaram Sanatorium, Chennai, and Prof. Dr Sundararajaperumal A, Professor of Respiratory Medicine, Institute of Thoracic Medicine, MMC & RGGGH, Chennai, as Guests of Honour.

A special feature of the Annual Day programme was the felicitation of staff members who have completed 25 years of service, in recognition of their long-standing commitment and valuable contribution to the Institute.

The formal session concluded with the vote of thanks proposed by Mr. Gopakumar TS, Senior Administrative Officer, ICMR-NIRT, followed by a cultural programme featuring the participation of the Institute community.

At the ICMR-NIRT Madurai Unit, the Annual Day celebrations were graced by Dr. L. Arul Sundaresh Kumar, Dean, Government Rajaji Hospital & Madurai Medical College. He felicitated the staff members as part of the celebrations, acknowledging their dedicated service and contribution to the Institute.

The 70th Annual Day celebration was a memorable occasion for the ICMR-NIRT family across its centres, providing an opportunity to celebrate the Institute’s rich institutional legacy, recognise the contributions of its staff and reaffirm its continuing commitment to research and service in the field of tuberculosis.
