Effectiveness of Structured Postpartum Follow-up and Lifestyle Counselling for Detection and Prevention of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus among Women with Prior Gestational Diabetes Mellitus: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Objectives:

To evaluate the effectiveness of structured postpartum follow-up and lifestyle counselling in detecting or preventing the progression to Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus among women with previous gestational diabetes mellitus

Study Overview:

This review aims to examine whether structured postpartum follow-up can facilitate earlier detection, improve outcomes and inform programme and policy decisions.

Study Approach:

This review will include randomized controlled trials, quasi-experimental studies and prospective or retrospective cohort studies. Structured postpartum follow-up includes OGTT at 6–12 weeks, periodic glucose monitoring, structured lifestyle counselling and active follow-up.

Expected Public Health Impact:

The study will provide evidence on structured postpartum follow-up and lifestyle counselling for women with previous gestational diabetes mellitus and inform programme and policy decisions.
