PROJECT

Estimation of risk associated with zoonotic tuberculosis in South India

June 2025 - May 2028

Objectives:

The overall objective of this study is to assess the potential risk of zoonotic tuberculosis (zTB) transmission between cattle and humans in a high TB-burden setting.

Study Overview:

Our goal is to generate evidence on livestock-associated risk factors and occupational exposure that may contribute to zoonotic TB transmission.

Study Approach:

To screen the workers from high-risk occupational settings such as large cattle farms and slaughterhouses, who have prolonged direct or indirect contact with cattle. Information related to occupational exposure, animal handling practices, and consumption of raw milk or milk products will be documented.

Expected Public Health Impact:

The findings from this study will help inform evidence-based strategies for surveillance and risk mitigation of zTB, supporting India’s goal of TB elimination and contributing to the broader objectives of the global End TB strategy.
